Right Now

Monday Moanin'

HOME, MI (January 2020) – It feels kinda’ weird writing the “2020” to indicate this new year. I’m sure that whoever wrote “1919” may have felt the same way. Repetitive digits don’t come around that often when discussing the year. It may because my daughter is graduating this year and It seemed so far way six or seven years ago. But welcome to the new year and a new lacrosse season – in a month or so at least. This will be my first season in quite some time when I wasn’t making a schedule, developing a line-up or revising a practice plan. So far, retirement is going well – we’ll see come March 9th if I feel the same way.

2019 turned out to be a good year – the PLL got started, lax fans were treated to some excellent High School contests and the U of M Women’s team cracked the top 10 and should be a force for a while.

In this column, each Monday or Tuesday…possibly Wednesday, I’ll focus on topics that have been on my mind and should be on yours. I’ll try and update you on important things related to lacrosse in Michigan and sometimes things that have nothing to do with lacrosse. So, the Monday Morning Mumbo is going on hiatus for a while – in its place, I present to you – Monday Moanin’ and by using the title, I wish to pay homage to Bob Talbert, one of my favorite columnists growing up.

Coaches Clinic – On Saturday in Dexter (Dexter HS), PLG will be hosting a coach’s clinic from 9am-Noon. Speakers include Chris Kolon, Jake DeCola, John Paul, Jim Rogalski and others. To register, go to www.premierlacrossegroup.com

PLL Waterdogs – The Premier Lacrosse League named their seventh franchise the Waterdogs. At first, I wasn’t too keen on the name but after reading an article by SI that featured an interview with Paul Rabil discussing the thought behind it, I developed a new appreciation. The league has made all the right moves thus far and being aware of social media, fan support and staying ahead of the curve are what will keep them meaningful.

Lax Con - I missed the convention this year and the bus trip that was sponsored by US Lacrosse – Michigan. Work sometimes gets in the way. Judging from the pictures posted on social media, it looked like a great time. Those who attended the Fan Fest were treated with autograph sessions from US Lacrosse National Team members and stars from the PLL. Coaches and officials had the opportunity to learn from the best in the educational breakout sessions. And, there were opportunities to socialize with lacrosse fans from around the country. Next year, lax fans will head to Baltimore.

Schedule – I’m checking the collegiate schedules to see what games I can cover in February. Yes, February. First day looks like it will be February 8 in Ann Arbor, when U of M hosts Cleveland State. Could we have an early spring? I hope so. Then, later in the day, Wooster (OH) plays Albion at Detroit Country Day. That clash will begin at 9pm. There should be some good games to see this season – looking forward to getting back out there.

Football – The NFL will be playing their conference championship games this weekend. Usually, they coincide with Lax Con, but not this year. On the AFC side, this Steeler fan is happy that Tennessee is traveling to Kansas City instead of the Ravens hosting the game. KC looked unstoppable in the second half against Houston. I have to take the Chiefs in this one.

In the NFC game, Green Bay heads to San Francisco. The Niners crushed the Packers earlier this season. I think the result will be the same, only a lot closer.

That sets up a very red Super Bowl – San Francisco and Kansas City. That would be a fun one! Let’s go with that.
